CORAL GABLES, Fla.-The University of Miami women’s tennis team completed day one of the 2003 Gator Fall Classic winning three singles and five doubles matches Friday afternoon in Gainesville, Fla.
Senior Mari Toro (Miami, Fla.) won her first-round singles match in Flight A, beating Patricia Kolendo of South Florida 6-1, 6-3.
Newcomers Audrey Banada (North Miami Beach, Fla.) and Natalie Mikolich (Boca Raton, Fla.) both won their opening matches in Flight B.
Banada beat Christine Suard of Florida International in straight sets 6-1, 6-1, while Mikolich beat Gina Craig of South Florida 6-2, 6-3.
Banada and Toro teamed up in doubles winning both matches of the day. In the first round they beat Pamela Fernandez and Ola Luczak of Central Florida 8-3. In the second round they beat Paola Guerrero and Christine Suard of FIU 8-4.
Sara Robbins (Tuscon, Ariz.) teamed with Staci Stevens (Hammond, La.) as they won their first two rounds of play. The duo beat Kristina Lohmos and Amira Samara of UCF 8-5 in the first round before beating Marie France Lord Andrade and Gabriela Duch 8-1 in round two.
Play continues Saturday morning in Gainesville, Fla.
