CORAL GABLES, Fla. (hurricanesports.com) – Led by senior Leyre Santaella Sante’s match-high 18 kills, the University of Miami volleyball team defeated BIG EAST opponent Rutgers, 3-1 (28-30, 30-17, 30-26, 30-27) on Sunday afternoon at the College Avenue Gym in Piscataway, N.J.
Miami remains perfect in BIG EAST play at 2-0 with the win and improve to 12-4 overall on the season while the Scarlet Knights fall to 6-9 and 0-2 in the BIG EAST.
“This was a big win for us,” Head Coach Nicole Lantagne Welch said. “We are starting out 2-0 on the road and it is always tough to win games away from home in the BIG EAST.”

The Hurricanes rallied after falling in the first game, 30-28, taking the Scarlet Knights in the second game, 30-17. Miami out hit Rutgers .500 to .167 in the second frame to tie the match at one game apiece. The Hurricanes would win the next two games 30-26 and 30-27 to seal the match.

Santaella Sante posted 18 kills for the second time this season to lead the Hurricanes and turned in four total blocks with a .371 hitting percentage. Freshman Jill Robinson continued to shine for Miami with a career-high 52 assists along with five digs and three kills and sophomore Robin Lewullis chipped in seven kills along with seven blocks to pace the Hurricanes.
The Hurricanes will return to Coral Gables to host Boston College on Sunday, Oct. 5 at 2 p.m. The match will be broadcast live on WVUM 90.5 FM and can be heard live through hurricanesports.com.
