Hurricanes Fall to Florida State, 3-1

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (hurricanesports.com) – The University of Miami volleyball team fell to in-state rival Florida State, 3-1 on Friday night at the FSU Classic in Tallahassee, Fla.

The Hurricanes (8-4) went neck to neck with FSU (7-4) in the first game, tying the game at 10-10 with a kill by Karla Johnson. The Seminoles would go on to take the lead before Miami would once again tie the score on a Johnson kill at 21-21. FSU eventually downed UM 30-28 to take the first game.

The second game mirrored the first as the two schools battled for the lead. FSU appeared to run away with the lead until the Hurricanes rallied off four straight points to lead the Seminoles 16-14. Florida State regained the lead and took the Hurricanes to 28-26. Miami then went on a 4-0 run to win the game, 30-28 on a kill by Francheska Savage and tie the match at one all.

Florida State would come out strong in the third and fourth games, downing the Hurricanes, 30-26 and 30-25 to win the match.

The Hurricanes were led by senior outside hitter Leyre Santaella Sante who posted 17 kills on 33 attempts against the Seminoles. Junior outside hitter Valeria Tipiana posted 16 kills and 13 digs for her second double-double performance of the weekend.

Miami will return to face Jacksonville at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 20 for their final game of the FSU Classic.
