CORAL GABLES, Fla. (hurricanesports.com) – The University of Miami volleyball team defeated San Diego State, 3-1 on Thursday afternoon at the Wildcat Classic in Tucson, Ariz. to claim their fifth victory of the season and remain undefeated 5-0.

The Hurricanes jumped out to an early lead, taking the first game 30-21 while out-hitting the Aztecs .444 to .156. SDSU (4-2) struck back in the second game, winning 30-23. The Hurricanes regrouped in the third game with a 30-21 win and wrapped up the victory in the fourth game winning 30-23.

The Hurricanes held SDSU to a .112 hitting percentage in the four games due to the play of the Hurricane middle blockers. Sophomore blocker Robin Lewullis collected 13 kills and posted a .321 hitting percentage to go along with four blocking assist and one solo. Freshman Francheska Savage also turned in one of her best performances of the season, hitting .643, collecting 10 kills and five block assists.

Miami was once again led by the play of junior outside hitter Valeria Tipiana. Tipiana totaled 25 kills in the win to go along with nine digs and seven block assists.

“We played a great match today,” Head Coach Nicole Lantagne Welch said. “It was good to see our team turn it up and play to the caliber that we think we are capable of playing. We had a great game by our middle blockers. Robin Lewullis played extremely well and Valeria Tipiana once again carried the load for us.”

The Hurricanes will face No. 10 Arizona tonight at 7:30 p.m.(PT). Arizona (2-3) is coming off it’s second straight loss, losing to No. 20 Santa Clara on Friday night.
