CORAL GABLES, Fla. (hurricanesports.com) – The University of Miami Volleyball team downed Rhode Island, 3-1 Thursday afternoon at the Wildcat Classic in Tucson, Ariz. to remain undefeated on the season.

The Hurricanes (4-0) started off slow, edging out the Rams 30-25 in the first game and falling 30-19 in the second game. Miami struck back in the third game, taking Rhode Island 20-26 and pulled out the win, overpowering the Rams in the fourth and final game, 30-16.

“This was a very difficult match for us,” Head Coach Nicole Lantagne Welch said. “I was very disappointed in the way we played, but it is always great to get a win. It really took us a while to get our rhythm in the first two games, but I feel that we really came together and took it to Rhode Island in the fourth game.”

Miami was once again led by junior outside hitter Valeria Tipiana who totaled 21 kills in the four games, posting a .450 hitting percentage and 24 total points. Senior outside hitter Leyre Santaella Sante mirrored Tipiana’s performance with 20 kills on 40 total attacks and 21 points and junior libero Jamie Grass collected 18 digs.

The Hurricanes will return to action on Friday to face San Diego State at 12:30 p.m. and No. 10 Arizona at 7:30 p.m.
