Dorsey Named 1 of 3 Finalists for Davey O'Brien Award

FORT WORTH, Texas (www.hurricanesports.com) – The Davey O’Brien Foundation has announced the three finalists for the 2002 Davey O’Brien National Quarterback Award and senior quarterback Ken Dorsey (Orinda, Calif., Miramonte HS) has made the list. Dorsey joins Brad Banks of Iowa and Carson Palmer of Southern California as a finalist.
Dorsey has completed 182-of-330 passes (55.2 %) for 2,773 yards (seventh on the UM single-season list) and 24 touchdowns (fifth on UM’s single-season list) in leading No. 1-ranked Miami to an 11-0 (6-0 in the BIG EAST) record this season. Along the way, Dorsey has set new UM career records for passing yards, completions, attempts, and total offense. The senior signalcaller also has thrown for 200 or more yards in nine of 11 games, surpassing 300 yards four times with one 422-yard effort.
Dorsey also has set BIG EAST career records for passing touchdowns (82), passing yards (8,969), and pass completions (628) on the way to improving his career starting record to 37-1 (.974), including UM’s current 33-game winning streak. The winningest quarterback in UM history, Dorsey is the first QB in school history to lead the Hurricanes to three consecutive 10-win seasons and the only one to lead the team to three 11-victory seasons, as well. Dorsey has completed 628 of 1,090 pass attempts (57.6% – 5th in UM history) for 8,969 yards and 82 touchdowns with only 25 interceptions during his four-year Miami career.
The O’Brien Advisory Committee is composed of national sportswriters and commentators. The National College Football Awards Association will announce the winner at the 2002 Home Depot College Football Awards Show on Thursday, Dec. 12, in Orlando. The 26th annual O’Brien Awards Dinner is scheduled for Feb. 17, 2003, at The Fort Worth Club in Fort Worth, Texas.
