May 5, 2002
Storrs, CT (hurricanesports.com) – University of Miami junior Andre Johnson (Miami Senior) won the 100-meter dash with a time of 10.59 to lead the University of Miami men’s track and field team at the BIG EAST Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Storrs, CT.
Johnson, a wide receiver on the UM football team and co-MVP of the Rose Bowl this past season, posted the fastest time by a Hurricane this season in winning the championship.
Johnson is the third Hurricane in the last four seasons to take home the 100-meter title. Former Hurricane Daryl Jones won the BIG EAST 100-meter title in 1999 and 2000. Johnson, who also won the BIG EAST 60-meter title earlier this season, becomes the sixth runner in BIG EAST history to win both the indoor 55-meter/60-meter title and outdoor 100-meter title in the same season.
Johnson also anchored the UM 4×100-meter relay to a third-place finish (40.91). Joining Johnson on the relay was sophomore Willis McGahee, freshman Kelly Jennings and freshman Roscoe Parrish.
Senior Aaron Moser (Bonne Terre, MO), competing in his final BIG EAST Championship, finished third in the pole vault with a mark of 4.80 meters (15-09.00).
