The University of Miami is putting on a Hurricanes Spirit Poster Contest. Show your Hurricane Spirit by creating a poster. All posters will be on display in the Knight Sports Complex for the Miami vs. Syracuse women’s basketball game on Wednesday, January 16, 2002.

  • The poster must be at least 18 x 24 inches
  • All participants that submit a poster will receive Complimentary Admission for them and a guest to attend the Hurricane Women’s Basketball game on January 16, 2002 at the Knight Sports Complex.
  • All posters must be turned in to the Community Relations Dept. no later than January14, 2002.
  • The winner of the contest can bring 5 guests with them to the game and will receive pizza and refreshments at the game.
  • In addition, the winner of the contest will be announced at halftime of the game and will be presented with an award.

A Hurricane Salute to Women in Sports

As a celebration of National Girls and Women in Sports, the University of Miami Athletic Department, a Dade Partner, is sponsoring a Sports Clinic on Friday, January 18, 2002. The theme “A Hurricanes Salute to Women in Sport” serves to highlight the accomplishments of women athletics and raise the awareness of young females to the opportunities in sports.

The Sports Clinic will take place from 9:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Knight Sports Complex on the campus of the University of Miami located at 5821 San Amaro Dr. (next to the Hecht Athletic Center) in Coral Gables. The day will provide students with the opportunity to learn fundamentals from the different female sports teams that the university has and they will have the opportunity to meet the female student-athletes and coaches. Lunch will be served to all students and chaperones.

Each middle school is invited to send one or two busses of forty or eighty female students plus eight chaperones to participate. The School must provide Bus Transportation. If your school is interested in participating, please contact Carla Fournier at:

The Sports clinic is limited to 400 student participants. Schools will be selected on a first-come, first serve basis. Confirmations and further details will be provided to the selected schools by early January.

The culminating event will be on Saturday, January 19th when the women’sbasketball team plays the Pirates of Seton Hall as part of a double-headerbasketball day at the Miami Arena. An interactive area will be set-upbetween the Metro-rail and the Miami Arena for fans to participate in beforeheading in to catch the BIG EAST basketball action. The Hurricanes men’sbasketball team plays Providence at noon followed by the Hurricanes vs.Seton Hall match-up at 3:00pm.
