Women's Basketball Plays Host To Northwestern

CORAL GABLES, Fla.-The Miami women’s basketball team plays host to Northwestern Wednesday night at 7 p.m. in the Knight Sports Complex on the UM campus.

This will be the second meeting between Miami (1-0) and Northwestern (0-1). The Wildcats beat Miami 56-48 last season in Evanston, Ill.

UM enters the contest after beating Iona 71-52 in its season opener Sunday afternoon in Coral Gables.

In her first collegiate start at point guard, Hutashi Wilson led Miami with a career-high 16 points, seven rebounds and three steals against Iona.

Head coach Ferne Labati enters her 14th season at the helm of the Hurricane basketball program. Labati is the all-time winningest women’s basketball coach at Miami with a record of 232-147.

Northwestern, under the direction of June Olkowski, enters tonight’s game 0-1, after suffering a 68-63 loss to Northern Illinois Sunday night.

Olkowski is in her third season as the Wildcats’ head coach. She has compiled an 11-44 record.

Junior Emily Butler led the Wildcats with a game-high 18 points and also had five steals.

The game will be broadcast live on WVUM (90.5 FM).

In conjunction with the Miami Athletic Department and the Women’s Basketball team, the Daily Bread Food Bank will be sponsoring a food drive during the first two women’s basketball games.

A special discounted ticket ($2) will be offered to those who bring (3) non-perishable items to the Hecht Athletic Center on the day of the game.
