Volleyball Drops Final Match Of Davidson Tournament

Davidson, N.C. – The Miami volleyball team lost 0-3 to American University in the Hurricanes’ final match of the Davidson Tournament on Saturday, September 1st (18-30, 27-30 and 19-30). The Eagles were 26-4 last season and Patriot League champions. With the win over Miami (1-2), American went 3-0 this weekend and took the Davidson Tournament championship.
Junior outside hitter Marcela Gamarra (Medellin, Colombia) had a team-high 10 kills with a .308 attack percentage for the match. Gamarra finished the tournament with 48 total kills, 24 digs and was named to the All-Tournament team.
Senior middle blocker Kristi Sprinkel had 22 kills and 18 digs for the tournament.
The Miami freshmen corps of Valeria Tipiana (26 tournament kills, 33 digs), Sandra Totten (24 kills, 32 digs), Elizabeth Tyson (29 kills, 40 digs) and Jamie Grass (6 kills, 129 assists and 46 digs) provided Miami with the bulk of its offense and defense.
Also contributing during the tournament were senior outside hitter Vanessa Koehler (4 digs), sophomore Lynsey Irwin (1 assist, 1 dig) and three freshmen: Christina Hernandez (2 kills, 5 digs), Ashley Youngs (3 kills, 3 digs) and Mallorey James (1 assist, 1 dig).
Miami now returns home to Coral Gables to host the inaugural Hurricane Invitional. The Hurricanes open at home at 2 p.m. on Friday, September 7th against Long Island in the Knight Sports Complex. The Hurricanes, Long Island, Woffordand Alabama-Birmingham will participate in the round-robin tournament.
