CORAL GABLES, Fla. (AP) — Swin Cash scored 20 points and Svetlana Abrosimova added 16 as top-ranked Connecticut beat Miami 77-53 on Tuesday night in the Big East opener for both teams.
The Huskies (5-0) overwhelmed Miami (2-2) with their full-court pressure defense and fast-break offense.
Chanivia Broussard had 15 points for Miami, which has lost 14 straight games to the Huskies.
Abrosimova, wearing a protective brace on her right ankle after injuring it in practice Friday, made a layup just three seconds into the game and had 10 points in the first half.
In the first half, Connecticut shot 47 percent from the field and held Miami to 29 percent. Miami had 14 turnovers in the half.
Connecticut pushed its margin to a game-high 27 points in the second half. But Miami used a 14-2 run to close the gap to 15 on Alicia Hartlaub’s short jumper.
Connecticut has won 40 straight games in the month of December since losing to Vanderbilt on Dec. 29, 1993.
Connecticut played its fourth straight game without 6-foot-5 center Kelly Schumacher, who is out with a stress fracture in her right foot. She is expected back at the end of December.
