Women's Basketball Travels To Northwestern

CORAL GABLES, Fla.–The University of Miami women’s basketball team will travel to face Northwestern Friday night at 7 p.m. in Evanston, Ill.

This will be the first meeting between Miami (1-0) and Northwestern (1-0), and the first meeting with a member of the Big Ten conference in almost 10 years. UM beat Purdue 65-63 during the 1991-92 season.

UM enters the contest after beating Florida Atlantic 87-50 in its season opener Monday night in Coral Gables.

Sophomore Amanda Papuga (Oak Brook, Ill.) led the Hurricane offense in the win over FAU with 13 points, while teammate Sheila James (Rubonia, Fla.) chipped in 11 points.

Head coach Ferne Labati enters her 13th season at the helm of the Hurricane basketball program. Labati is the all-time winningest women’s basketball coach at Miami with a record of 218-132 (.623).

Northwestern, under the direction of June Olkowski, enters tonight’s game 1-0, after a win over Northern Illinois Monday night. Olkowski is in her second season as the Wildcats’ head coach. She has compiled a 8-21 record.
