Women's Basketball Opens The Season With FAU

CORAL GABLES, Fla.–The University of Miami women’s basketball team will open the 2000-01 season against Florida Atlantic Monday, Nov. 20 at 7 p.m. in Knight Sports Complex on the UM campus.

Miami is 11-0 all-time against the Owls (0-1) and looks to win its fourth consecutive season opener. The Hurricanes are 20-8 all-time in season openers.

Miami returns nine letterwinners, including four starters from last years 14-15 club.

The Hurricanes will be led this season by 5-5 junior guard Sheila James (Rubonia, Fla.).

She enters this season eager to improve on a sophomore season in which she led the team in scoring, averaging 11.7 points per game.

Head coach Ferne Labati enters her 13th season at the helm of the Hurricane basketball program. Labati is the all-time winningest women’s basketball coach at Miami with a record of 218-132 (.623).

FAU, under the guidance of second year coach Chancellor Dugan, returns four letterwinners and one starter from last year’s 15-14 club.

The Owls lost their season opener Saturday night as they fell 93-65 to Florida International in Boca Raton.

Newcomer Ruta Griniute led the team with a double-double, 13 points and 12 rebounds.

The game will be broadcast live on WVUM (90.5 FM).
