Women's Basketball Announces 2000-2001 Schedule

CORAL GABLES, Fla.-Games versus Southeastern Conference and Big Ten opponent’s highlight the University of Miami 2000-2001 women’s basketball schedule. The Hurricanes have had one of the nation’s toughest schedules over the years and this season will be no different featuring 10 teams that went on to postseason play last season.

“We have a very challenging schedule again this year,” said head coach Ferne Labati. “To improve and grow as a team we have to play on a competitive level. Our goals are set very high this year and in order to obtain those goals we have to compete with the highest level of competition.”

The Hurricanes tip off the 2000-2001 season at home in Knight Sports Complex on Nov. 20 facing Florida Atlantic, before traveling to face Big Ten opponent Northwestern on Nov. 24. The Hurricanes are back at home on Dec. 2 against St. Bonaventure.

UM opens BIG EAST play at home on Dec. 5 playing host to the defending National Champions Connecticut.

The Hurricanes make a short trip to play cross-town rival Florida International on Dec. 9, before beginning a six-game home stand on Dec. 16 with South Florida.

UM will face SEC member Kentucky on Dec. 19 and Fairfield on Dec. 22.

The Hurricanes will host the Gatorade Holiday Classic Dec. 28-29, which includes George Mason, Western Michigan and New Hampshire. UM will host Radford on Jan. 2 to round out the six-game home stand.

Three of the Hurricanes first five conference games will be on the road. They continue BIG EAST play at Virginia Tech on Jan. 6. then on to St. John’s on Jan. 13 before returning home on Jan. 17 to face Providence.

UM travels to Boston College on Jan. 19, then wraps up non-conference play with Western Kentucky at home on Jan. 21.

Other BIG EAST home games include, 2000 Final Four participant Rutgers (Jan. 27), Georgetown (Feb. 3), West Virginia (Feb. 7), St. John’s (Feb. 14), Pittsburgh (Feb. 17) and Villanova (Feb. 27).

The Hurricanes will play two exhibition games to start the 2000-2001 season. The All Star Girls Report come to Knight Sports Complex on Nov. 9 and then the Hurricanes will host a foreign team on Nov. 16.
