Hurricanes Start Strong, Rout Furman In Season Opener, 88-46

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami (1-0, 0-0 BIG EAST)defeated Furman (0-1, 0-0 Southern), 88-46, in its season-opener held at theKnight Sports Complex on Sunday.
The Hurricanes opened the game with a 26-7 run and never lookedback. UM forced 33 Lady Paladin turnovers and recorded 22 steals. Furmanshot just under 35.0% from the field.
The ‘Canes shot 48.6% from the floor, including a 5-for-9 effort from thearc and held a 45-41 rebounding advantage.
Sophomore Sheila James (Palmetto, FL) led UM with a career-high 21points including a 5-for-7 performance from the three-point line. James wasfollowed by freshman Amanda Papuga‘s (Oak Brook, IL) 19 points and team-highsix assists.
Freshmen Alicia Hartlaub (Schaefferstown, PA) and Meghan Saake(Wellington, FL) each made their first career start. Hartlaub played ateam-high 26 minutes, scoring six points and grabbing five rebounds. Saakemanaged eight points, five rebounds and three steals in 19 minutes ofaction.
Furman was led by Kena Hodges’ 16 points an 11 rebounds. JackieSmith followed with 12 points and eight rebounds.
