CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Senior All-America candidate Johnny Hemsleypoured in a game-high 26 points to lead five Hurricanes in double-figures asthe 25th ranked University of Miami men’s basketball team defeated UpstateBasketball, 99-87, at the Knight Sports Complex on the UM campus.

Sophomore John Salmons hit four of six three pointers en route to 22points, junior center Dwayne Wimbley added 16 points, junior Elton Tylerregistered a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds, and senior VernonJennings added 10 points, five assists and five steals for Miami.

Fred Cofield and Daimon Beathea each scored 21 points to leadUpstate Basketball.

Miami, which led 52-47 a halftime, saw its lead drop to 59-58 aftera three-pointer from the right corner by Beathea. Beathea connected on fiveof nine from long range. Upstate Basketball hit 15 of 30 three-pointers onthe evening to keep the game close.

Miami responded with a 12-4 run capped by a slam dunk by Hemsleywhich brought the crowd to its feet and pushed the Hurricanes lead back71-62 with 10:49 to play.

The Hurricanes dominated in the paint recording a 44-32 reboundingadvantage and outscoring Upstate Basketball 28-6 on second chanceopportunities.

Miami opens the regular season on November 19 at Central Floridabefore returning to Miami for its home opener against Monmouth at 7:30 p.m.on November 23 in the Miami Arena.
