CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami women’s soccer team (2-0)opened up its 1999 home schedule with a 2-0 shutout win over Long IslandUniversity (0-1) at the new Cobb Stadium for Soccer, Track and Field. Thegame also marked the first collegiate soccer match to be played at the newlyerected facility.

“We played good in spurts,” said UM head coach Jim Blankenship.

“But we’re just two games into the season so this is what I expected. Wehave some things we still want to work on. Overall, I thought these ladiesplayed well.”

Leading off the Hurricane scoring was freshman midfielder AllisonMcWhinney, who scored from seven yards out in the 37th minute on an assistfrom fellow freshman Lisa Gomez.

Just before the first half came to a close, Deidre Bass scored UM’ssecond goal in the fifth minute as she headed in a Mehryn Corrigan cornerkick.

Both McWhinney and Bass scored for the second time in as many games,as each tallied goals in UM’s 3-0 win over Florida State on August 29.”I am extremely happy in the way we have started the season,” addedBlankenship. “We scored a shutout on a solid Long Island team. Theseladies fought hard and won the game.”

Miami held Long Island without a shot on goal the entire first half,and finished the game with a 14-7 advantage.

The Hurricanes next travel to the Maine Invitational in Orono, ME.Miami will open up play against the Black Bears on Saturday, September 4 andfinish off with New Hampshire on Sunday. UM’s next home match is scheduledfor Friday, September 14 against Florida Atlantic at Cobb Stadium.
