Julian Rivera is entering his seventh year as an assistant athletic trainer and staff physical therapist in athletics working with the UM baseball team.

Rivera specializes with overhead athletes. He has conducted research in the field of injury prediction for the overhead athlete, in which he continues to advance the studies in this field. Rivera is co-program director for the University of Miami’s first fellowship for the upper extremity athlete. Rivera also assists as a core faculty within the UM Sports Physical Therapy Residency Program and faculty within the Master’s Athletic Training Program at the University of Miami.

Rivera completed the UM Sports Physical Therapy Residency Program, which he graduated from in July 2018.

Rivera is a Doctor of Physical Therapy by the Federation of State Boards of Physical Therapy. Julian is a Sports Certified Specialist by the American Board of Physical Therapy Specialties (2019), licensed and certified Athletic Trainer (2013) by the Board of Certification for Athletic Trainers, a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (2013) by the National Strength and Conditioning Association.

Originally from New York, Rivera earned his bachelor’s degree in athletic training (2013) and his Doctorate of Physical Therapy (2015) from Ithaca College. Before arriving to The U, Rivera practiced in outpatient settings in Hyde Park, N.Y., and Tampa, Fla. He also worked with the Houston Astros Gulf Coast Baseball League in Kissimmee, Fla.

Rivera and his wife, Nina, have a daughter, Anya.
