Miami Falls to UCF in Dual Race
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami rowing team was back in action Friday afternoon, going head-to-head with the UCF Knights at the UCF Rowing Complex in Orlando, Fla.
Following an almost three-hour weather delay, the dual got underway beginning with the top varsity eight boat. The Hurricanes and the Knights went stroke-for-stroke down the course but, ultimately, UCF (6:48.90) edged the Miami 1v8 (6:50.80) by just under two seconds to give the Knights their first win of the day.
“We had a really solid race from the 1v8, with awesome effort, but they just came up a little short in the end,” head coach Dave Sanderson said. “The 2v8 took it from start to finish, sticking to plan and executing.”
In the second race of the day, the Hurricane 2v8 dominated the water from start to finish, crossing the finish line in a time of 6:56.70, a full nine seconds ahead of UCF’s second eight boat.
Following the 2v8 race, the varsity four boats took to the water for their turn to race. The 1v4 finished in second in a time of 8:24.40, while the second varsity four boat faced stiff competition in four-boat race, taking home the bronze with a race time of 7:55.20.
In the final race of the day, the Miami 3v8 showed significant improvement from last race, but could not take down the Knights, finishing in second in a time of 7:44.70.
“It was another good learning experience for our novice rowers,” Sanderson said. “We will rest and retool for our next race at the Lake Wheeler Invite.”
