Hannestad To Compete in Davis Cup World Group II

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – University of Miami senior Benjamin Hannestad is beginning his fall tennis season overseas, competing on the Danish team in the first round of the Davis Cup World Group II tournament.

“It is an honor to be picked for the Danish Davis Cup team and I’m really looking forward to a great Davis cup tie against Thailand at home,” Hannestad said. “It is always a huge honor being able to represent your country and my previous Davis Cup experiences are ones that I will cherish forever.

Denmark bested Puerto Rico 5-0 in March of 2020 in the World Group II Play-Offs to earn a promotion to World Group II status. Hannestad and the Danish team will begin their quest for World Group I status at 10 a.m. on Friday, facing off with Thailand in the first round of World Group II action.

Hannestad will suit up alongside Frederik Nielsen in Denmark’s doubles match against Thailand. The match will take place at Sydbank Arena in Kolding, Denmark.

“I am looking forward to playing doubles for Denmark with a doubles grand slam winner,” Hannestad said. “It will be a great learning experience. I am ready for a great Davis cup match, which will allow me  to grow as a player and as a person. My favorite thing about this weekend will be playing doubles in front of our home crowd because usually the atmosphere is electric. Go Denmark!”

The eight highest-ranked winners of the World Group II ties will automatically progress to the 2022 World Group I Play-offs, where they will have the opportunity to move up to World Group I standing with a win.
