Week 2 ProCanes Report: Berrios Scores First TD

Week 2 ProCanes Report: Berrios Scores First TD

by Camron Ghorbi

The weekly ProCanes Report will weed through all the NFL highlights and news to bring you the information you care about the most… what the University of Miami Hurricanes did during the week prior. Braxton Berrios hasn’t stopped working since he was drafted in 2018, and that work paid off Sunday when he scored the first touchdown of his career in a home game with the San Francisco 49ers. Read on for more from across the league.

Top Performers:

Braxton Berrios (New York Jets) – six catches, 59 yards, first career NFL touchdown

Not only did third-year wide receiver Braxton Berrios enjoy a breakout game for the Jets with his first career touchdown reception, but he finished with a career-high six receptions in New York’s matchup with San Francisco. Berrios, who was one of just two NFL players to average more than 10 yards per punt return last year, has emerged as a bright spot for the Jets offense in the season’s early going.

Joe Jackson (Cleveland Browns) –
three total tackles, one fumble recovery

The season did not start out how Joe Jackson may have hoped; the second-year defensive lineman was cut by the Dallas Cowboys during training camp. But the talented end, who was picked up by Cleveland, has already showcased the type of play-making ability that characterized his time at The U; in a win over the Bengals last Thursday, Jackson had the first fumble recovery of his career and totaled three tackles.

Calais Campbell (Baltimore Ravens) –
five total tackles, one sack

Looking to inject some veteran leadership into their team this offseason, the Baltimore Ravens added 34-year-old Calais Campbell. The five-time Pro Bowler and reigning Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year Award winner has done nothing but deliver through two games, and had a five-tackle performance in a  Week 2 win over Houston that included the 89th sack of his career.

Stat of the Week: Of the 122 modern era nominees on the Pro Football Hall of Fame ballot released in September, Miami had three former players make the cut: Jeff Feagles, Jeremy Shockey and Reggie Wayne, who was a finalist a year ago.

“Three’s Company, Four Is A Crowd”
: Heading into Week 3 of the NFL season, there are three franchises that boast four ProCanes on the roster: the Cleveland Browns (David Njoku, Olivier Vernon, Joe Jackson and Sheldrick Redwine), Los Angeles Chargers (Michael Badgley, Rayshawn Jenkins, Denzel Perryman, Tyree St. Louis) and Seattle Seahawks (DeeJay Dallas, Phillip Dorsett, Travis Homer and Greg Olsen).

Other Notables:

  • Travis Homer (Seattle Seahawks) has been one of the top kick returners in the NFL this season, and through two weeks, has the third-most kick return yards of any player with 132 (on five returns). He has a long return of 44 yards – recorded Sunday night against New England.
  • Deon Bush (Chicago Bears) recorded the first interception of his NFL career on Sunday for Chicago in a win over the New York Giants.
  • Michael Badgley (Los Angeles Chargers) connected on both of his field goal attempts in a narrow overtime loss to Kansas City. Badgley has hit five of six field goals this season, with his only miss so far coming from 50 yards out.
  • Frank Gore (New York Jets) has played in more NFL games than any running back in NFL history; this past week’s start against the San Francisco 49ers, his former team that drafted him 16 years ago, was his 228th career game.
