Miami Madness: The Final Four
Miami Madness is down to the Final Four with a mix of old and new — but all undeniably classic – football games.
The Hurricanes have won five national championships, which means we knew at least one of those title game wins wasn’t going to make the Final Four. But did we expect only two of those games to make it?
The 1984 Orange Bowl, where UM captured its first national title, remains in the bracket. It will square off against a game from just two seasons ago – the Hurricanes’ memorable rout of Notre Dame at Hard Rock Stadium in 2017.
On the other side of the bracket sit two games just a season apart from one another. In 2000, Miami just missed out on another national championship game appearance, edged in the BCS computers by Florida State – who UM had defeated earlier that season. The Hurricanes headed instead to the Sugar Bowl, where they dominated Florida at the Superdome.
The next season there was no debate. The undefeated and top-ranked Hurricanes earned a spot in the Rose Bowl opposite Nebraska, where they dismantled the Cornhuskers 37-14 for their fifth national championship. Now the 2000 and 2001 teams battle in our other semifinal.
