CORAL GABLES, Fla. – After a three-game road swing, the University of Miami men’s basketball team will be back on its home court Wednesday night.
Miami (14-14, 6-12 ACC) is set to host No. 22 Virginia, the reigning NCAA champion, at 9 p.m. at the Watsco Center.
The game will be televised live on ACC Network HERE, with Steve Schlanger and Dan Bonner on the call. Joe Zagacki and Danny Rabinowitz will have the radio broadcast on 560 The Joe WQAM HERE, while action can also be heard on WVUM 90.5 FM HERE and in Spanish on WMYM 990 AM HERE. The Hurricanes are 12-11 all-time against Virginia, including 7-2 at home and 3-7 under the direction of ninth-year head coach Jim Larrañaga, who served as an assistant at Virginia from 1979-86. In the most recent meeting between the two sides, the Cavaliers earned a 56-46 home triumph on Feb. 2, 2019.
Miami is coming off a 63-57 setback Saturday night against Georgia Tech at McCamish Pavilion in Atlanta. After trailing by 20 points in the second half, the Hurricanes went on a 24-2 run to take the lead, but could not hold on for the comeback victory.
Junior guard Chris Lykes paced Miami with 14 points, 12 of which came in the second half, while redshirt junior guard Kameron McGusty added 11 in the contest.
Virginia is 21-7 (13-5 ACC) on the season after winning nine of its past 10 games, including six in a row. Fourteen of the Cavaliers’ 15 games, all of which were ACC affairs, have been decided by single digits. Redshirt senior forward Mamadi Diakite is the team’s leading scorer at 13.6 points per game.
Picked fourth in this year’s ACC preseason poll, Virginia is coming off a 35-3 (16-2 ACC) campaign in 2018-19 that ended with the program’s first national title.
Since the program rebirth in 1985-86, Miami is 5-7 against reigning national champions, including 2-3 at home and 2-1 under Larrañaga. In the most recent such game at home, the Hurricanes logged an 80-69 victory over Duke on Jan. 25, 2016.
Following its meeting with Virginia, Miami wraps up the regular season Saturday 4 p.m. against Syracuse, live on ACC Network.
