Perez-Somarriba Named ACC Player of the Week
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – For the first time this year and sixth in her illustrious career, Estela Perez-Somarriba of the University of Miami women’s tennis team is the ACC Player of the Week.
A senior who claimed the award once last year and on four occasions in 2018, Perez-Somarriba’s selection was announced Tuesday by the league office. She shared the distinction with Vivian Glozman of Virginia.
Perez-Somarriba won both of her singles matches at the top spot last week, first defeating No. 60 Kenya Jones of Georgia Tech, 2-6, 6-4, 6-4, Friday in Atlanta. The decision clinched an eventual 5-2 comeback win for the Hurricanes over the nation’s No. 17 team.
The Madrid native then turned in a dominant 6-1, 6-1 victory over Emmanuelle Salas of fourth-ranked Florida State Monday morning at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center.
The two-time reigning ACC Player and defending NCAA singles champion, Perez-Somarriba also played a non-collegiate exhibition match Saturday night against Coco Gauff, who is No. 51 in the WTA rankings. Held at the Delray Beach Tennis Center, Perez-Somarriba took six games from Gauff in the first-ever women’s match at the Delray Beach Open.
Perez-Somarriba and the Hurricanes resume play Friday at noon against Virginia Tech at home in Coral Gables.
