Perez-Somarriba Ranked Third to End Fall, Cadar at No. 69
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Two members of the University of Miami women’s tennis team earned spots in the Oracle/ITA singles rankings to conclude the 2019 fall campaign.
Senior Estela Perez-Somarriba places third nationally, marking the 10th consecutive release she has been in the top three, dating back to March. No other player has been in the top five for even two straight releases.
Meanwhile, freshman Selma Cadar garnered the first ranking of her young career, checking in at No. 69 on the list.
The two-time reigning ACC Player of the Year and reigning NCAA singles champion, Perez-Somarriba entered the fall ranked second. She posted a 14-2 record, good for the best fall campaign of her career, and went 7-2 against top-80 opponents. Both of her defeats came against players who are now ranked top-five.
Cadar, in her first semester of collegiate competition, tallied a 7-8 ledger, but just three of the setbacks came versus unranked foes. The Bucharest, Romania, native registered a pair of top-85 triumphs, including one over a top-25 player. Just 12 freshmen, including only two from the ACC, are ranked above Cadar.
Overall, the Hurricanes are one of 35 teams in the country with multiple players ranked. Eight of the 14 teams in the ACC are included in that group. Just 21 schools, six of which are in the ACC, feature at least two top-70 singles players.
