Perez-Somarriba Set for Oracle ITA National Fall Championships
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Estela Perez-Somarriba of the University of Miami women’s tennis team will conclude fall competition this weekend in Newport Beach, Calif.
The senior, ranked second in the country, is set to play in the prestigious Oracle ITA Fall National Championships at the Newport Beach Tennis Club.
“We’re looking forward to competing at another high-level event. Estela has played some great tennis lately and she’s looking forward to continuing along that path,” Miami head coach Paige Yaroshuk-Tews said. “We’re going to take it one day at a time and look to push through a very solid field.”
In its third year of existence after replacing the ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships, this is the lone tournament of the year that features players from all five levels of collegiate tennis. There is one representative each in the 64-spot singles draw from Division II, Division III, NAIA and NJCAA.
Perez-Somarriba has taken part in the tournament in each of its first two years, advancing to the Round of 16 both times, first in Palm Desert, Calif., in 2017 and then in Surprise, Ariz., in 2018.
This will be Perez-Somarriba’s first collegiate action since Oct. 16, as she competed as an amateur in ITF $80K pro tournaments the past two weeks, tallying an impressive 5-2 record that featured a top-200 WTA victory.
Draws for the Oracle ITA National Fall Championships, which will include seven of the top 10 players in the ITA singles rankings, have yet to be announced. The singles championship match, set for Sunday at 2 p.m. ET, will live air on ESPN3 and then be re-aired on ESPNU.
