Green Beats Orange in Annual World Series, 15-9
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – An offensive explosion over the final two days of the Orange & Green World Series helped push the Green squad to a 15-9 victory in the annual fall intrasquad series.
The two sides played 21 innings over three days, featuring a running score format where the winner would be declared at the end of the three-day event.
The Orange team jumped out to an early lead over the first seven innings of action, with sophomore Anthony Vilar clubbing an opposite field homer that sparked their big day at the plate. Freshman Alex McFarlane was solid on the mound for the Orange squad, allowing four runs (two earned) and striking out six batters over five innings. Fellow freshmen Alex Munroe and Yordani Carmona, who was swapped in a trade for Tyler Keysor before the start of the game, each tossed a scoreless inning of relief to wrap up Day 1 with Orange ahead, 6-4.
But the Green side answered back in a big way on Day 2, as a JP Gates grand slam was the highlight of a seven-run offensive explosion. Chris McMahon delivered the performance of the day on the mound for Green, scattering three hits and allowing just one run over five innings. Green entered the final day of the World Series ahead, 11-7, but did not let up against its Orange opponent.
Slade Cecconi blanked the Orange side over four innings, while Green scored three runs in the first inning to add some cushion to its lead. The final day of competition ended with Green earning a 15-9 victory in the Orange and Green World Series. McMahon and Cecconi were named Co-Pitchers of the Series, while Freddy Zamora was named Player of the Series after having a strong showing on the field and at the plate.
