Four Canes Headed to ITA SE Regionals
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Seventeen schools, two states.
Competitors from institutions all across Florida and Georgia will descend upon Tallahassee, Fla., this weekend for the ITA DI Women’s Southeast Regional Championships.
Four members of the University of Miami women’s tennis team will make the short trip up to the annual tournament, which rotates throughout schools in the Sunshine State and Peach State.
Sophomore Daevenia Achong, freshman Selma Cadar, freshman Nada Dimovska and senior Yuna Ito are all set to take part in the action at the Scott Speicher Tennis Center.
“Regionals is always an exciting time of year,” Miami head coach Paige Yaroshuk-Tews said. “We’ve been working hard for quite some time now and a spot in the Oracle ITA Fall National Championships is up for grabs. We’re looking forward to a lot of great tennis.”
The singles draw finalists and the winning pair in the doubles draw will all earn bids to the prestigious tournament, held Nov. 6-10 in Newport Beach, Calif.
Qualifying play begins Thursday at Florida State, but each Miami competitor is already in the 64-player main draw. Additionally, the Hurricanes’ two doubles duos—Achong/Cadar and Dimovksa/Ito—are already in the 32-pair main draw. Competition in both draws begins Friday morning.
In the singles draw, Achong, ranked No. 80 and seeded No. 10, will face Florida Atlantic’s Louie McLelland. Meanwhile, Ito plays Georgia Tech’s Nami Otsuka, Cadar takes on Florida State’s Mira Stegmann and Dimovska squares off with UCF’s Nandini Sharma.
Achong and Cadar, seeded fourth in doubles, are set to play Mary Courville and Maeva Roquebert of Mercer, while Dimovska and Ito meet eighth-seeded McCartney Kessler and Marlee Zein of Florida.
