Perez-Somarriba Finishes Second in Oracle/ITA Rankings
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Estela Perez-Somarriba of the University of Miami women’s tennis team placed second nationally in the final Oracle/ITA singles rankings.
Despite entering the NCAA Singles Championship atop the national rankings and winning the tournament title, Perez-Somarriba dropped one spot in the year-end list.
Perez-Somarriba, who finished the year 43-5 and was the lone player in the nation to reach the 40-win plateau, capped her campaign with the highest ranking by a Hurricane since 2007. That season, fellow NCAA champion, Audra Cohen, concluded the season ranked first.
Along with Perez-Somarriba coming in second, freshman Daevenia Achong earned a spot in the singles rankings to end the season. The Second Team All-ACC performer received her first position on the singles list, checking in at No. 123 overall.
This is the 15th consecutive season multiple Hurricanes have finished the season in the ITA singles rankings, a stretch that goes back to 2005.
In addition, Achong and senior Daniella Roldan placed No. 25 in the year-end doubles rankings. After taking part in the NCAA Doubles Championship, Achong and Roldan garnered the top closing spot for a Miami duo since Stephanie Wagner and Wendy Zhang placed eighth in 2015-16.
The final team rankings were released May 22 and Miami took the No. 20 spot, good for its 17th straight top-25 finish and 15th top-20 position in the last 16 years.
