Perez-Somarriba, Achong/Roldan Make NCAA Championships

CORAL GABLES, Fla. Estela Perez-Somarriba of the University of Miami women’s tennis team will compete in the NCAA Singles Championship, while Daevenia Achong and Daniella Roldan are set to take part in the NCAA Doubles Championship, as announced Tuesday evening.

The 64-player singles tournament is set for May 20-25 at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Fla., while the 32-pair doubles tournament will take place May 21-25 at the same site.

The full tournament brackets will be announced one day before competition starts. To see the complete lists of selections, click HERE.

A junior from Madrid, Perez-Somarriba earned the top overall seed in the singles draw. This is the fifth time a Miami player has taken the top spot, as she follows Audra Cohen (2006, 2007), Megan Bradley (2005) and Ronni Reis (1988).

Second-ranked Perez-Somarriba, who is one of 15 automatic qualifiers, is a top-three overall seed for the second year in a row. By earning a top-16 seed, she has clinched ITA All-America status for the third consecutive season.

The two-time reigning ACC Player of the Year is set to become the 10th Hurricane to appear in the NCAA Singles Championship at least three times. She made the Final Four in 2017 and the Sweet 16 in 2018.

This is the 17th straight year Miami will have at least one player in the NCAA Singles Championship, a streak that dates back to 2003, head coach Paige Yaroshuk-Tews’ second season at the helm.

Meanwhile, Achong and Roldan received an at-large bid to the NCAA Doubles Championship. It will be the first NCAA individual action for both Achong, a freshman, and Roldan, a senior.

This is the first time a Miami duo has been picked for the doubles field since 2016. Achong and Roldan will be the first Hurricanes to actually compete in the event since 2015, as Miami’s pair withdrew in 2016.

Achong and Roldan will become the 36th and 37th Hurricanes to play in the NCAA Doubles Championship, as well as the 28th unique pair. This is the 12th time in the last 17 years a Miami duo has made the cut and will be the 10th time a Hurricane team actually competes.

The Hurricanes, ranked No. 19 nationally, open their 24th straight NCAA Team Championship appearance Friday at 3 p.m. ET against No. 34 Washington State in Stillwater, Okla.
