Women's Track Remains at No. 10
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami women’s track and field program remained at No. 10 for the third straight week in the Outdoor Track & Field National Team Computer Rankings, as announced Monday afternoon by the USTFCCCA.
The women have now held a top-10 ranking since the preseason rankings were announced on March 18. Miami began the season at No. 8 and has come in at No. 10 the past three weeks.
The Canes added two marks over the weekend to total 16 scored marks, forming Miami’s team score of 183.68.
Senior Michelle Atherley’s program-leading score in the heptathlon added 26.63 points to the team score. Atherley’s score of 5,966 points bested her previous Miami record by more than 100 points and currently ranks second in the NCAA and first in the ACC this season.
Sophomore Debbie Ajagbe’s first-place performance in the women’s discus was the second new mark for the Canes. Ajagbe’s mark of 56.39m in the discus throw was not only a personal-best mark, but also ranks second all-time in Miami history. Ajagbe entered the weekend with the third-best mark, which she registered at last year’s Power 5 Trailblazer Challenge.
Miami’s 4x100m and 4x400m relay teams make up the other two 2019 season marks. The Canes put together two top-five times in the events at the Florida Relays, including the third-fastest 4x100m relay time (43.56) in program history.
Symone Mason and Kayla Johnson each recorded two individual marks last season for the Canes to add to Miami’s team total, while Ajagbe and Atherley also registered one from 2018.
Ten of Miami’s 12 marks from last season occurred on the track, while the final two were on the field, coming in the shot put by Ajagbe and discus by senior Zakiya Rashid.
Miami will have one week off before returning to Gainesville, Fla., for the Tom Jones Memorial on April 26-27.
