W. Tennis Reenters Oracle/ITA Top 25
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami women’s tennis team moved up two spots in this week’s Oracle/ITA team rankings to take the No. 25 position nationally.
The Hurricanes, who have been in the top 25 nearly all season, defeated then-No. 30 Syracuse, 5-2, on the road Sunday afternoon in their final regular season road match.
Miami is one of 10 ACC schools in the rankings, joined by top-ranked North Carolina, fourth-ranked Duke, ninth-ranked NC State, No. 12 Florida State, No. 19 Virginia, No. 22 Wake Forest, No. 31 Syracuse, No. 33 Georgia Tech and No. 36 Boston College.
In addition, Miami is one of 15 schools in the top 25 in both men’s and women’s tennis, five of which are in the ACC. It is the first time both Hurricane teams are in the top 25 since the release on April 19, 2011.
Junior Estela Perez-Somarriba, who is 19-3 this spring, is once again ranked second nationally in singles. This is the fourth consecutive release the reigning ACC Player of the Year has held that spot, dating back to March 5.
The Hurricanes once again also sport a top-20 doubles duo, with freshman Daevenia Achong and senior Daniella Roldan coming in at No. 20. It is a slight three-spot drop for the pair, which has four ranked triumphs, including two in the top 20.
Miami resumes action Thursday at 1 p.m. when it welcomes Louisville to the Neil Schiff Tennis Center.
