Arreaga and Gonzalez Named ACC Performers of the Week
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Kevin Arreaga and Samantha Gonzalez of the University of Miami track and field program were named ACC Performers of the week after posting NCAA-leading marks in their respective events last weekend.
Arreaga was named the men’s ACC Field Performer of the Week after launching a 71.07m throw in the men’s hammer throw to win the event at the Power 5 Trailblazer Challenge. The throw was not only a personal-best mark, but also improved his Miami program record THAT he set last season.
In his opening meet for the outdoor season, Arreaga tabbed his second-ever ACC weekly honor after earning it one year ago after the same meet. This is the first time this season a Miami male student-athlete has been honored in the field events.
On the women’s side, Gonzalez earned her first ACC weekly accolade of the season after running her best 400m hurdles opener to date. The senior’s time of 57.33 gave the Carrolton, Texas, native a first-place finish just in front of teammate Anna Runia.
These are the Canes’ second and third outdoor ACC award this season after Raheem Chambers was named the men’s track performer of the week on March 20 for his performance in the 200m dash. Miami has now earned five overall in the 2019 season with Michelle Atherley and Tiara McMinn earning indoor weekly honors.
The Canes travel to Gainesville, Fla., on Thursday for the three-day Florida Relays meet. This weekend’s competition is the first road meet of the outdoor season for the Canes after hosting back-to-back meets to open the outdoor campaign.
