No. 43 Miami Takes on No. 37 FSU

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Following a weeklong hiatus, the University of Miami men’s tennis team returns to the USTA National Campus Collegiate Center for a neutral-site clash against ACC foe Florida State.

No. 43 Miami’s (8-4, 2-0 ACC) match versus the No. 37 Seminoles (10-4, 1-1 ACC) will be part of the USTA Collegiate Series, which includes a total of 12 matches featuring 22 different teams throughout the season. It will be the third of four matches in the series that is part of the introduction of the PlayFair Challenge System using PlaySIght SmartCourt technology.

The mission of PlayFair is to improve the level of sportsmanship throughout tennis with the goal of increasing participation in, enjoyment and viewership of the sport. PlayFair is a feature of PlaySight’s SmartCourt technology, enabling players to challenge line calls made by their opponents or an official’s overrule using instant video replay (a concept in sports known as Video Assistant Refereeing, or VAR). Players and officials can review where the ball landed by looking at a multi-angle video replay on the PlaySight touchscreen kiosk or an iPad/tablet device.

The Hurricanes sport a 48-19 all-time record in their series with the Seminoles, which dates back to 1930. However, Florida State enters the contest riding a two-match winning streak in the series, most recently topping Miami, 4-0, in Orlando on March 9, 2018.

Miami enters the match with a pair of sophomores ranked in the ITA national singles poll, as Adria Soriano Barrera comes in at No. 19 and Bojan Jankulovski sits at No. 71.

The Seminoles dropped both of their matches last weekend, losing a closely contested contest against Georgia Tech, 4-3, before falling 4-1 to Oklahoma in Norman two days later. Individually, FSU has one ranked singles players in redshirt senior Lucas Poullain (No. 99) and one ranked doubles pair in Aziz Dougaz and Alex Knaff (No. 63).

Following Sunday’s contest, the Hurricanes will return to the Neil Schiff Tennis Center Tuesday for the first of five home matches over a six-day stretch. The Hurricanes will play two of their final three non-conference matches on Tuesday, with a doubleheader against UNC Wilmington (11 a.m.) and Boston University (4 p.m.).
