Cheerleaders

The University of Miami has a long tradition of cheerleading since its founding in 1925. With five National Championships in football, and countless Bowl and NCAA Basketball Tournament appearances, the spirit program has been a vital part of the athletic programs at UM.

The cheerleading program at Miami consists of two teams, the coed team with 12- 15 members and the all-girl team which is made up of 15- 18 females. The teams cheer on the sidelines at football games and men’s and women’s basketball games, as well as volleyball games. Cheerleaders may also travel to away football games and post-season play, for both football and basketball. The University of Miami Cheer teams will be competing this year at the virtual UCA College Championship.

The Miami Hurricanes Dance Team consists of 18-20 talented dancers who perform on the sidelines at all home football and basketball games and are featured in timeouts as well as during half-time performances. The Conference Championships 2021

For the first time ever, eleven schools in the ACC organized a cheer and dance championship. Our University of Miami Cheer team and the Sunsations dance team competed in both the Fight Song Divisions and Performance Divisions.

UM Cheer took 2nd place in the Performance Division and 3rd place in the Fight Song Division.

Performance Division set up and scoring (cheer): Teams performed performance routines for NCA or UCA Competitions later in the spring. Judging consists of 2 NCA judges and 2 UCA judges. There is one head judge from each division who gives feedback to each team for upcoming NCA and UCA Competitions. All girl and Coed compete in same division and will be about overall score. Top 5 or Top 3 Teams were awarded depending on numbers.

The Fight Song Division scoring (cheer): Scores based on crowd engagement and effectively performing team fight song.

Sunsations Dance Team took 2nd place in the Performance Division for their Jazz routine and 4th place in the Fight Song Division.

Performance Division set up and scoring (dance): All routines under 2 minutes except team performance with 2:15 time limit. Teams must enter 1 routine with style of choice. Teams are awarded a score in the Gold, Silver or Bronze category. Top 5 placements were awarded.

The Fight Song Division scoring (dance): Dance Teams perform fight song or band chant of choice with max time of 2 minutes. 25 athlete max. Skill difficulty is not judged. All skills must effectively engage and lead the crowd. Even though difficulty is not judged, hitting a skill negatively impacts team score.
