Mason Breaks 200 IM Record Twice on Day 1

PROVIDENCE, R.I. — Freshman Zorry Mason dominated in the morning’s preliminary rounds and outdid herself in the finals on Day 1 of the Bruno Invite from the Katherine Moran Coleman Aquatics Center on the Brown University campus.

Competing in one of her signature events, Mason set the tone for the day with a school record-performance in the 200-yard IM, finishing in a blazing time of 1:59.95.

Mason, one of Miami’s top swimmers during the entirety of the squad’s fall schedule, dropped her time by more than a full second in the night’s finals, earning a first-place finish with a time of 1:58.92 to further etch her name into the Hurricanes’ record books.

In addition to Mason’s school record, the Hurricanes posted one NCAA “B” cut time, seven lifetime-best times and 15 season-best times.

Junior Manon Viguier, who took third in the 50-yard freestyle preliminary Friday morning, earned Miami’s second top finish in the night’s finals with a time of 22.99.

Viguier was the lone swimmer to finish in under 23 seconds, topping Brown’s Maddie Salesky (23.06), who took first in the preliminary.

The Hurricanes’ 200 free relay entry, comprised of Viguier, Mason, freshman Coco Hull and sophomore Sydney Knapp, came up just short Friday night, taking second with a time of 1:31.90, just behind the host Bears’ entry (1:31.21).

Miami’s 400 medley relay finished in second to cap the night’s action, with sophomore Alaina Skellett, Mason, senior Roxanne Yu and Viguier finishing in 3:42.88.

Among other Hurricanes to compete in the morning’s prelims included sophomore Carmen San Nicolas Martinez, who took 12th in the 500-yard freestyle (4:59.48). Knapp (23.65) and Hull (23.72) also swam the 50 free.

The Bruno Invite continues Saturday from the Katherine Moran Coleman Aquatics Center. Events include the 400-yard IM, the 100-yard butterfly, the 200-yard freestyle, the 100-yard breaststroke and the 100-yard backstroke.
