Swimming Set for Bruno Invite in Providence
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami swimming team continues its fall schedule with a trip to Providence, R.I., for the three-day Bruno Invite hosted by Brown University, beginning Fri., Nov. 30.
Miami will be competing for the first time as a team since a home tri-meet on Nov. 3, and Hurricanes head coach Andy Kershaw said his group is looking forward to the challenge.
“I’m really excited to have the Hurricanes up in Providence and warm it up,” Kershaw said. “We’re looking forward to having a great meet. Our team has a great attitude and has had a great attitude all year. We’re looking forward to having a lot of fun, swimming fast and hopefully sending a little bit of a message and staking our territory.”
Miami has delivered wins against talented competition during the fall portion of its schedule, and is looking to do the same in a field that includes the host Bears, Princeton, Johns Hopkins, Villanova, Dartmouth and Rider.
“I think they’re well-prepared, as we’ve gone through our different training phases this year. Some of them include what we’re calling ‘mutation’ phases, where we give their body a chance to mutate into a faster, stronger version of itself,” he said. “I think they’ll be in a great place. We’ve been training really hard and doing speed work in practice, and I’m really hopeful that shows up this weekend.”
Outside of Miami’s three selections to the ACC / Big Ten Challenge at Purdue earlier in November – freshman Zorry Mason, freshman Maria Artigas Fernandez and junior Manon Viguier – the Hurricanes have not faced off against outside competition in nearly a month, and Kershaw said his group is “ready to unleash.”
“I know they’re looking forward to it. We’ve talked about ‘earning our seat’ this year – that has been our slogan,” Kershaw said. “There’s some meaning behind that, but we’ve talked to them about doing that this weekend.”
The Bruno Invite will represent the final swimming event of the fall schedule as Miami continues its build towards the postseason.
“It’s a good chance to practice three-day, prelim-finals sessions, similar to what it’ll be at ACC Championships and NCAA Championships, and this will be our first chance to do that too,” Kershaw said. “There’s a lot going on this weekend, and we’re looking forward to all of it.”
