W. Tennis Set to Host Bedford Cup

CORAL GABLES, Fla. The University of Miami women’s tennis team will host the Bedford Cup at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center this weekend.

Featuring 59 players from 10 teams in the Sunshine State, the Bedford Cup serves as the annual fall Florida state championship tournament. Action will begin at 8 a.m. Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Along with Miami, players from Bethune-Cookman, UCF, Florida A&M, Florida Atlantic, FIU, FGCU, North Florida, USF and Stetson will take part in the event.

Friday, the first day of competition, features one round of doubles action, with all 11 matches taking place at 8 a.m. After that, there will be two rounds of singles matches, with the final contest scheduled for 5 p.m.

The Hurricanes will be represented by junior Yuna Ito, senior Ana Madcur, freshman Lucia Marzal Martinez, senior Daniella Roldan and sophomore Ulyana Shirkova. The former four are in the Singles No. 1 bracket, with Marzal Martinez seeded second and Shirokova seeded seventh. Ito is the No. 2 seed in the Singles No. 2 draw.

Additionally, Madcur and Roldan are in the Doubles No. 1 flight, while Ito and Shirokova are the top seed in the Doubles No. 2 bracket.

Madcur and Roldan meet FIU’s Basak Akbas and Mariia Solnishshkyna in their opener at 8 a.m., while Ito and Shirokova have a first-round bye.

Shirokova takes on FGCU’s Sara Kelly at 9:30 a.m., while Roldan meets third-seeded Komola Umarova of FIU at 10 a.m., Madcur plays Bethune-Cookman’s Michelle Ncube at 11 a.m. and Marzal Martinez squares off with Stetson’s Danel Ashirova at 11:30 a.m. Ito has a first-round bye and will open play at 2:30 p.m. in the quarterfinals of her draw.

The competition features one ranked competitor in No. 87 Rebeka Stolmar of UCF, the top seed in the Singles No. 1 draw.

The University of Miami – Coral Gables Campus has introduced an updated parking policy for the 2018-19 school year. Enforcement is now extended to seven days a week, 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. PayByPhone pay stations are available across all campus parking lots and garages to facilitate visitor parking.
