Hurricanes to Open Season at Mary Fossum Invitational

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami women’s golf team opens its 2018-19 season on Saturday, as it travels to East Lansing, Mich., to take part in the 35th annual Mary Fossum Invitational. This year’s event will be held at the par 72, 6,334-yard Forest Akers West Golf Course.
 
The tournament will consist of 54 holes over a two day stretch, with 36 holes played on Saturday.
 
Tee times will begin at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, with a 9 a.m. shotgun start on Sunday. Live scoring for the tournament will be available at Golfstat.com.
 
Miami enters the 2018-19 season, after making its sixth straight trip to an NCAA Regional under head coach Patti Rizzo, where the team finished tied for 15th.

The Hurricanes return four starters from last season, including Dewi Weber, Renate Grimstad, Kristyna Frydlova and Macarena Aguilera.

In the final 2017-18 Golfstat rankings, Miami finished 38th and will battle four top-40 schools in East Lansing. Overall, the field includes, Michigan State (13), Eastern Michigan (182), Florida (14), Georgia (33), Indiana (58), Kansas State (74), Mercer (78), Mississippi State (70), Northern Illinois (135), Old Dominion (60), Rutgers (118), Sacramento State (56), Texas Tech (50), Toledo (97) and Virginia (29).

The Canes last competed in the Mary Fossum Invitational during the fall of 2016. Over the two-day event, the Hurricanes concluded play as the overall champions, holding a 40-stroke lead over second-place Princeton. Dewi Weber won the tournament with a total score of 212 (-4), and was one of four Hurricanes to finish in the top 10.

THE LINEUP
Dewi Weber
-Has posted 16 career top 10 finishes.
-Posted a team-best 72.03 strokes per round average during the 2017-18 season.
-Earned a spot on the 2017 All-ACC team and the WGCA All-America second team.
 
Claudia De Antonio
-Graduate transfer from LSU.
-Competed in 10 events for the Tigers during the 2017-18 season, posting a 74.38 stroke average.
-Had a low round of 67 at the Darius Rucker Invitational, where she finished fourth.
 
Macarena Aguilera
-Competed in all 10 events as a sophomore.
-Tied for sixth at the Florida Challenge with a total score of 145.
-Tied for 10th at the Hurricane Invitational with a three-round total of 218.
 
Renate Grimstad
-Placed second on the team with a 73.28 stroke average.
-Finished the 2017-18 season with three top-five finishes.
-Led the team to a first place finish at the Hurricane Invitational, tying for second with a five-under 211.
 
Kristyna Frydlova
-Posted a 74.93 stroke average during the 2017-18 season.
-Competed in all 10 events during her freshman campaign.
-Registered a season-low three-under par 68 at the Schooner Fall Classic.
