Perez-Somarriba Ranked Third to Open 2018-19
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Junior Estela Perez-Somarriba of the University of Miami women’s tennis team is third in the preseason national singles rankings, as announced Tuesday by the ITA.
A two-time ITA All-American and the reigning ACC Player of the Year, Perez-Somarriba trails only Texas’ Bianca Turati and North Carolina’s Makenna Jones on the list. The third position matches the top mark of her career, which she also held in four consecutive rankings releases last season, from April 10-May 29.
Perez-Somarriba, who went 39-8 and finished fifth nationally in 2017-18, is the highest-ranked Hurricane in the preseason rankings since Audra Cohen took the top spot in 2006-07.
Along with her place on the singles list, Perez-Somarriba also checks in at No. 51 in doubles rankings with junior Daniella Roldan. For Roldan, this is the highest ITA ranking of her career, with the previous mark of No. 66 set April 3, 2018, also with Perez-Somarriba.
Additionally, senior Ana Madcur and sophomore Ulyana Shirokova hold the No. 54 place in the ITA preseason doubles rankings. For Shirokova, this is her top mark as a collegian, eclipsing the No. 85 position she earned with Dominika Paterova on April 17, 2018.
The Hurricanes, who went 18-8 (11-3 ACC) and reached the NCAA Sweet 16 last season, begin fall competition Sept. 14-16 at the Duke Bonk Invitational in Cary, N.C.
