Soriano, Jankulovski and Langmo Garner All-ACC Recognition
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – For the first time, three University of Miami men’s tennis players earned All-ACC recognition in the same season, as announced Thursday by the conference.
Freshman Adria Soriano received a spot on the second team, while fellow rookie Bojan Jankulovski and senior Christian Langmo were tabbed to the third team.
Soriano worked his way up the singles lineup throughout his first collegiate career and is now playing in the No. 1 spot for the Hurricanes (14-12), who earned their first NCAA Team Championship bid since 2011 Tuesday. Ranked No. 74 nationally, he holds a 13-8 dual match record with four of the team’s six singles wins against ranked opponents. The Barcelona native has three top-30 triumphs this season, with his top collegiate win so far coming against Duke’s then-No. 11 Nicolas Alvarez, 6-4, 6-2, for Miami’s second top-25 win of the season.
Soriano plays at the top of the Canes’ doubles lineup as well, partnering Langmo to a 4-0 record against nationally-ranked tandems, including three top-20 victories and a pair of top-15 triumphs. In their first match together on March 18, the pair took picked up a road victory against UCF’s then-No. 11 Korey Lovett and Eero Vasa, leading to them being named ACC Doubles Team of the Week on March 20. The same Vasa and Lovett tandem earned one of the eight automatic bids to the Doubles Championship and holds a 15-2 record this season.
Ranked No. 30 in the nation, Langmo and Soriano became the first Hurricanes pair in a decade to earn a place in the 32-team NCAA Doubles Championship, which will be held May 24-28 at the Wake Forest Tennis Complex in Winston-Salem, N.C.
Langmo, who alternates with Soriano for the No. 1 singles spot, earns his first All-ACC honor with 15 dual victories so far this season, second-most on the team, tallying 11 of them at the top of the lineup. Last week, Langmo, who has been ranked as high as No. 99 in the Oracle/ITA rankings this season, earned the Hurricanes’ first postseason point for 2018 when he took down seventh-seeded NC State’s Tadas Babelis, 6-3, 7-6 (7-5), in the ACC Championship in Cary, N.C.
Another player who has made an immediate impact on the program, Jankulovski leads the Canes this spring with a 19-2 record, including a team-best 9-2 mark in ACC action. Playing in the No. 2, No. 3 and No. 4 spots, the lefty, who is ranked No. 122, was responsible for clinching both of Miami’s top-25 victories this season, grabbing the decisive victories against then-No. 23 NC State and then-No. 22 Duke in Coral Gables.
Miami’s season continues next weekend in Gainesville, Fla., when it takes on North Florida May 12 in the opening round of the NCAA Team Championship.
