W. Tennis to Host Opening Rounds of NCAA Team Championship
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – For the 13th time in the past 14 years, the University of Miami women’s tennis team will host the first two rounds of the NCAA Team Championship.
Miami (16-7, 11-3 ACC) earned the No. 16 national seed for the tournament, as announced Tuesday night. This is the Hurricanes’ 23rd straight NCAA Team Championship appearance and their 33rd in the 37-year NCAA era.
Currently No. 15 in the Oracle/ITA rankings, Miami will host UCF, FIU and LIU Brooklyn at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center May 11 and 12.
UCF, ranked No. 22, is 19-4 (5-1 AAC) on the season. The Knights have no ranked singles players, but the doubles pair of Ksenia Kuznetsova and Natalie Martinez checks in at No. 52 nationally.
FIU, ranked No. 39, sports a 17-2 (6-0 C-USA) mark in 2018. Andrea Lazaro is No. 10 in the Oracle/ITA singles rankings, while Ulyana Grib and Maryna Veksler hold the No. 19 spot in doubles.
LIU Brooklyn, unlisted in the Oracle/ITA rankings, has a 17-4 (5-0 NEC) record thus far. The Blackbirds do not have any ranked singles players or doubles pairs.
Miami features two players in the singles rankings, led by sophomore Estela Perez-Somarriba and third in the country. Senior Sinead Lohan, a fellow former NCAA Singles Championship finalist, follows her at No. 64.
The Hurricanes also have two ranked doubles duos, with Perez-Somarriba coming in at No. 45 with Ana Madcur and No. 79 with Daniella Roldan.
Miami is 23-1 all-time at home in NCAA Team Championship matches, a stretch that includes 22 consecutive victories.
The Hurricanes, seeking their 12th Sweet 16 berth in the past 13 seasons, have reached the second round 16 years in a row, dating back to head coach Paige Yaroshuk-Tews’ first campaign at the helm in 2002.
