Templeton Makes U.S. Collegiate National Team

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami’s Haley Templeton was named to the U.S. Women’s Collegiate National Team-Detroit (CNT-Detroit) roster, with which she will train and compete in Detroit from June 22 to July 1.

The redshirt junior setter was picked for one of 24 spots in what is considered the second tryout for the U.S. Women’s National Team. Templeton and CNT-Detroit will train at the University of Michigan June 22-26 before being split up into two 12-player squads for three exhibition matches at the Cobo Center. Those scrimmages will be played on June 27, June 28 and June 30, 2018.

“While we are so proud of Haley and this accomplishment of making the USAV Collegiate National team, we are certainly not surprised,” Miami head coach Jose “Keno” Gandara said. “She’s put in a tremendous amount of effort to change over her four years here and has turned herself into a special setter. When we sent her to tryout, we absolutely expected her to be included in the program. We are proud to be affiliated with her and have her represent our program, and we sincerely hope she’s proud of herself – she’s definitely earned it.”

Templeton earned her spot on the roster after going through a field of 234 players at the U.S. Women’s National Volleyball Team Open Tryouts in Colorado Springs, Colo., in early March. The tryout will coincide with and take place under the same roof as the USA Volleyball Girls’ Junior National Championships.

“I am so happy to represent the University of Miami on the U.S. Collegiate National Team,” Hempleton said. “I could not have done it without the help of my coaches and teammates pushing me to be better every day.”

One of 43 setters in Colorado Springs, the rising senior is now one of four setters on CNT-Detroit and the only one of five Atlantic Coast Conference setters to advance to this stage. In Detroit, she will be in the company of Ashley Brown from Washington State, Bailey Choy from Utah and Loyola Marymount’s Tess Reid.

Templeton, an AVCA All-America Honorable Mention and All-East Coast Region selection, played an instrumental role in Miami’s 22-6 season, which featured a run into the NCAA Championship and the team’s first postseason victory since 2014.

The setter sat out only one set in 2017 and accumulated 1,172 assists for an ACC-leading average of 10.77 assists per set. Templeton’s season featured a 61-assist performance on the road at Duke, which is the current career-best for the Alpharetta, Ga., native.

Her return from injury was also marked by career numbers in hitting percentage (.700 against North Carolina), digs (21 at Notre Dame) and blocks (six against Charleston). Templeton recorded eight service aces against the Tar Heels on Nov. 17, which is second most in program history.

Over the course of the season, the First Team All-ACC and All-ACC Academic Team setter earned ACC Player of the Week recognition twice and was the Sunshine State Classic MVP in the second weekend of the season.
