Shirokova Earns Third ACC Freshman of the Week Honor
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – For the third time in the past four weeks, Ulyana Shirokova of the University of Miami women’s tennis team has been named the ACC Freshman of the Week.
Shirokova clinched Miami’s 4-3 comeback victory at then-No. 19 Wake Forest Saturday afternoon in Winston-Salem, N.C.
“Ulyana is improving every week,” Miami associate head coach Laura Vallverdu said. “Her dedication and determination are getting better and it shows on match day. We are happy for her, but always looking for more each week.”
After trailing, 3-0, Miami stormed back to defeat the Demon Deacons, with Shirokova’s 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 triumph over Anna Ulyashchenko sealing the victory. She took six of the final eight games to earn her first win at the No. 4 spot.
Shirokova also logged a victory in doubles at the Wake Forest Tennis Complex, teaming with sophomore Dominika Paterova to defeat Courtney Meredith and Joanna Zalewski, 6-2.
On the season, the Ufa, Russia, native is 13-4 in singles play and a team-best 13-3 in doubles competition.
Shirokova and No. 18 Miami (10-6, 6-3 ACC) will be back on the court Friday at noon against Boston College at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center.
