Quarterman Earns UMSHoF's Kichefski Scholarship

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami Sports Hall of Fame announced that junior linebacker Shaquille Quarterman is the 25th recipient of the Walter Kichefski Endowed Football Scholarship, as selected by his coaches, for the 2018-2019 school year.

The junior from Orange Park, Florida has started every game at linebacker since arriving in Coral Gables, including the 2016 season as a true freshman, when he was named a Freshman All American and third team All-ACC selection.  In 2017, he was voted to the second team All-ACC by the conference coaches.  He will be presented a plaque for the award at the 50th Annual UM Sports Hall of Fame Induction Banquet on Thursday, April 19th at Jungle Island in downtown Miami. In addition, a plaque bearing his name will be displayed in the UMSHoF, along with the names of past winner’s.

There’s no question that Walter Kichefski embodied the Spirit of Miami.  He was associated with this university for 56 years as a player, coach and administrator.  Following Walter’s death in 1992, a committee was formed to raise funds for a perpetual football scholarship in Kichefski’s memory.  It’s a testament to his spirit that it only took one year to raise the $400,000 that it took at the time, to endow the athletic scholarship.  This remains the only undergraduate award presented by the University of Miami Sports Hall of Fame.

The scholarship recipient is chosen by the football coaches with the award going to the player who most embodies the characteristics by which Walter Kichefski lived:

·      Respect of his fellow man

·      Loyalty

·      Dedication

·      Sacrifice

·      Motivation

·      Inspiration.

Among the Class of 2018 UM Sports Hall of Fame inductees are baseball’s Yonder Alonso, basketball’s Chanivia Broussard and John Salmons, football’s Frank Gore, Devin Hester and Coach Larry Coker, track’s Dominique Darden, golf’s Tina Miller Lloyd and, Britney Butcher, the first soccer player ever inducted.
