Hurricanes to Play Marlins in Exhibition Tuesday
MIAMI — A true 305 affair will take place when the Miami Hurricanes visit their local Major League Baseball counterpart, the Miami Marlins, in an exhibition game Tuesday afternoon.
Game time is set for 3:10 p.m. on WVUM 90.5 and 990 AM ESPN Deportes from Marlins Park.
Freshman Chris McMahon (0-0, 0.00 ERA) will be making his first start on the mound and his first appearance as a Hurricane since injuring his meniscus this offseason. Marlins prospect LHP Dillon Peters gets the start for the Fish, who open their 2018 season Thursday against the Chicago Cubs at Marlins Park.
A native of West Chester, Penn., McMahon was selected in the 33rd round of the 2017 MLB First-Year Player Draft after a standout career at West Chester Rustin High School. McMahon, who was ranked No. 76 in Baseball America‘s list of the top-500 MLB Draft prospects, finished his senior year on the hill with an 8-0 record and a 0.77 ERA.
The Hurricanes’ last trip to Marlins Park came in 2012, when they became the first team to play the Marlins in their new ballpark on April 6. Similar to Tuesday, one of Miami’s most anticipated freshman made his collegiate debut in that game – lefthander Andrew Suarez, who tossed three clean innings.
After a four-year career at Miami, Suarez was selected in the second round of the 2015 MLB Draft by the San Francisco Giants, and spent most of last season with the Giants’ Triple-A affiliate in San Jose, Calif.
Miami’s last exhibition with the Marlins came in 2016 at Roger Dean Stadium in Jupiter, Fla., a 5-1 loss.
The Hurricanes (12-11, 6-3 ACC) are coming off a three-game sweep against Virginia from March 23-25. The exhibition is the start of five straight games away from Mark Light Field; the Hurricanes take on FGCU in Fort Myers on Wednesday and travel to Georgia Tech for a series against the Yellow Jackets in Atlanta from March 30 – April 1.
