Arreaga Sets UM Record at Hurricane Invitational
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Kevin Arreaga set a school record, as the University of Miami track and field program opened its 2018 outdoor season with a strong showing on the first day of the Hurricane Invitational.
Arreaga was second in the men’s hammer throw, posting a mark of 68.33m that set a new school record. The freshman broke Carlos Mangum’s previous UM-best mark of 66.87m, set on April 7, 2017.
“It’s always nice to begin the outdoor season with so many personal bests,” Miami director of track and field/cross country Amy Deem said. “We have very competitive efforts in the field events, which sets the tone for tomorrow.”
Gian Piero Ragonesi won the men’s discus with a mark of 55.28m, while Debbie Ajagbe won the women’s discus with a throw of 51.52m and Sherry Lubin was fifth with a mark of 44.13m.
Zakiya Rashid was Miami’s top performer in the women’s hammer throw, finishing third in the event with a personal-best mark of 54.41m. Ajagbe was sixth with a throw of 50.31m, while Lubin finished 13th at 41.42m.
Celine Thompson was second in the women’s high jump with a mark of 1.70m, while Kyra Maryland was fourth at 1.65m and Erika Voyzey was seventh with a mark of 1.60m. Tristan Schultheis was sixth in the men’s high jump with a mark of 2.00m.
Andreas Christodoulou finished third in the men’s pole vault with a personal-best mark of 4.60m.
Saturday’s action begins at noon with the women’s shot put, men’s javelin and men’s and women’s long jump, while the action on the track kicks off at 1 p.m. with the women’s 4x100m. The men’s 4x400m relay will close the meet Saturday at 4:50 p.m. Saturday’s competition will be broadcast on ACC Network Extra beginning at 1 p.m. and can be viewed by clicking here.
The Hurricane Invitational is the first of four meets held at Cobb Stadium this season. Miami will also host the Hurricane Alumni Invitational on April 6-7 and the Hurricane Collegiate Invitational on April 14 before serving as host to the 2018 ACC Outdoor Championships on May 10-12.
Following this weekend’s action, the Hurricanes will travel to Los Angeles to compete at the Power 5 Trail Blazer Challenge on March 23-24. The two-day meet will feature the only five Power 5 track and field programs in NCAA Division I that have a female head coach: Miami, Tennessee, Ohio State, Ole Miss and the host USC Trojans.
