Miami Opens ACC Tournament Play Thursday

BROOKLYN, N.Y. – The Miami men’s basketball team opens play in the quarterfinals of the 2018 ACC Tournament. The No. 3 seed in the field, the Hurricanes (22-8, 11-7) earned a double bye through the first days of the tournament and will play No. 6 seed North Carolina at approximately 9:30 p.m. Thursday in the final game of the day.
ESPN and the ACC Network are televising the tournament, while WQAM 560-AM has the local radio broadcast. The game also streams online through the WatchESPN app.
The winner of the Thursday game advances to the semifinals to take on either Duke, Virginia Tech or Notre Dame at approximately 9:30 p.m. Friday.
Ranked No. 24 this week by the Associated Press and No. 25 in the USA TODAY Coaches Poll, Miami won its final four games by a combined eight points. The four games each were determined by three points or fewer (eight total points), with each coming down to the final possession. It marks the first time in program history that Miami has won four-consecutive games, each by three points or fewer, and matches an ACC record, set three times previously (NC State in 1957, Duke in 1976 and 1984).
Miami is 14-12 in the ACC Tournament and is competing the 14th tournament. The Canes are the No. 3 seed for the second time in the last three years (2016). In head coach Jim Larrañaga’s first six seasons, Miami went 8-5 in the ACC Tournament, winning at least one game in each season. UM has won at least one game in the tournament in 11 of 13 seasons, including eight straight.
Miami is averaging 74.5 points per game and allowing 67.6 per game this season. Dewan Huell and Lonnie Walker IV lead the Hurricanes in scoring at 11.6 points per game. Walker led the Canes in scoring in ACC play with 13.7 points per game, while Chris Lykes averaged 11.9 points per game in conference action.
Walker earned Honorable Mention All-ACC honors Sunday and also was named to the ACC All-Freshman Team. Walker is the first Miami freshman to earn a spot on an all-league team (BIG EAST or ACC). UM has been affiliated with a conference since the 1991-92 season and joined the ACC for the 2004-05 campaign.
