W. Tennis Hosts Pitt and FAU in Doubleheader
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami women’s tennis team will face Pittsburgh and Florida Atlantic Friday for a doubleheader at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center.
Miami (3-3) takes on the Panthers at 10 a.m., in its first ACC match of the season, then meets the Owls at 5 p.m.
The first match can be seen live on ACC Network Extra HERE and the second is available HERE. Live stats for both affairs will be HERE.
This is the first recorded home dual match doubleheader in program history. Dates from the program’s first seven years, 1973-79, are unavailable, but the Hurricanes have not played a home doubleheader dating all the way back through 1980.
The Hurricanes are 4-0 all-time against Pittsburgh, defeating the Panthers each of the past four seasons since they joined the ACC by a combined margin of 26-2. In the most recent matchup, Miami tallied a 7-0 home triumph on April 16, 2017.
Miami is 29-0 versus Florida Atlantic, its most against any foe without a loss and its second-most wins against any team overall, trailing only USF. The Hurricanes have a 212-9 all-time scoring margin with 24 shutout victories. Most recently, Miami recorded 5-2 road win on March 31, 2017.
The Hurricanes, led by 17th-year head coach Paige Yaroshuk-Tews, feature a trio of nationally-ranked singles players in sophomore Estela Perez-Somarriba at No. 23, junior Ana Madcur at No. 114 and senior Sinead Lohan at No. 116.
Additionally, Perez-Somarriba and Madcur team together to form the No. 33 doubles pair in the Oracle/ITA rankings.
Pittsburgh, currently 5-3 (0-2 ACC) and under the direction of former Miami assistant coach Alex Santos, does not have any ranked players or duos.
Santos spent four years with the Hurricanes, helping the team reach the Elite Eight and finish in the top-10 each year from 2010 to 2013. He was the ITA National Assistant Coach of the Year his final season in Coral Gables.
Florida Atlantic, 4-4 on the year, has one player in the national rankings, with Aliona Bolsova checking in at third in the country. The Owls are coached by Marcy Hora-Cava, who played at Miami from 1998-2002, overlapping with one of Yaroshuk-Tews’ years as an assistant coach, her two as associate head coach and first as head coach.
In addition, Florida Atlantic assistant coach Caroline Wheelen, née Hora, was a standout at Miami, three times finishing ranked in ITA top 75, including twice in the top 30. Her final season was Yaroshuk-Tews’ first as an assistant with the Hurricanes.
Following its meetings with the Panthers and Owls, Miami travels to Anderson, S.C., to face No. 31 Clemson Sunday at 10 a.m.
