Perez-Somarriba Jumps to No. 16 on Singles List

CORAL GABLES, Fla. The first updated individual Oracle/ITA rankings of 2018 were released today and multiple University of Miami women’s tennis players made big moves.

Sophomore Estela Perez-Somarriba ascended from No. 36 to No. 16 in the singles rankings, good for the highest spring position of her career. Her best prior spring mark was No. 26, which is where she closed the 2017 campaign.

The Madrid native also earned her first doubles rankings, entering the list at No. 33 with junior Ana Madcur. It is also the first time Madcur has been nationally ranked in doubles.

The No. 33 spot is the highest for any Miami doubles pair since the last ranking of the 2015 spring season. It is also the first time a Hurricane duo has been in the rankings since May 4, 2017, the final release before last season’s NCAA Team Championship.

Along with Perez-Somarriba, the fifth-highest ranked ACC player in singles, senior Sinead Lohan also represents the Hurricanes, checking in at No. 58 in the country.

Miami (1-1), ranked No. 17 in the country, returns to action Feb. 17 at 11:30 a.m., when it meets No. 18 Oklahoma State in Stillwater, Okla.
